Executive Director's Corner

Camp Fire USA is officially 100 years old this month! I wonder if Dr. and Mrs. Gulick could ever have imagined that what began as a unique camp experience for girls would still be in existence today. The group of men and women who, together with the Gulicks, organized the original Camp Fire Girls were bold pioneers and experts in health, education, the arts, character development, and recreation. Their goal was the development of the “whole” girl.

Mrs. Gulick first coined the watchword of Camp Fire “WoHeLo” from the first two letters of Work, Health, and Love. She believed that” in constructive work lay the roots of true service to humanity and the real joy of living. Health was fundamental, and Love was our highest law.” (from WoHeLo: The Camp Fire History.)

While today’s Camp Fire has evolved to serve all youth and their families, there is no doubt that the original philosophy still applies. Our goal must always be that Camp Fire retains the high quality program the founders demanded.

We hope to see all of you at one or more of the Council’s Centennial Events this year. Join us for the memorable 100 Hour Fire at Camp DaKaNi, the Camp Fire Birthday Party, and Grand Council Fire as we celebrate Camp Fire’s long and unique history.

Jan Robinson
Interim Executive Director
