Executive Director's Corner
Happy New Year! As the calendar marks the beginning of a new decade, Camp Fire USA celebrates its Centennial year. Founded in 1910 by Dr. Luther Halsey Gulick, his wife, and a group of innovative thinkers, Camp Fire Girls was an organization ahead of its time. What began as a summer experience on the shores of Lake Sebago, Maine expanded in scope and spread quickly across the nation. One hundred years and many changes later, Camp Fire still can be proud of its core values and creative response to local community needs. Whether you were a Blue Bird in the ‘40’s, a camper in the ‘60’s, or involved in an after-school program in 2000, you are an important part of the Camp Fire story, and we invite you to join in this year of celebration.
It seems only natural that the year begins with one of Camp Fire’s most important events…the Annual Candy Sale. We tend to concentrate on the fundraising aspect, which, of course, is vital to the council, and on the achievements of our individual sellers, but more importantly, Camp Fire youth selling candy are proof to the community of the value and success of our programs. As you and your children meet the public during this year’s sale, share how important Camp Fire is to your family or tell about your own Camp Fire experiences. Let those you meet see that Camp Fire is still making a positive impact on youth. Ask if they were in Camp Fire; send them to our website. Tell them about the Centennial. It’s a wonderful time to reconnect.
Building “caring, confident youth and future leaders” is an ongoing challenge, yet remains the mission of this council. The board and staff are committed to achieving that goal, but the key ingredient to our success is you…the wonderful volunteers who continue the Camp Fire legacy of “giving service”. Many thanks for all you do!
For the next twelve months, let’s remember 1910 and celebrate 2010 together!
WoHeLo,
Jan Robinson, Interim Executive Director

Program Tips
Hopefully everyone is working hard to earn their Camp Fire USA Centennial Project emblem in the coming year. An easy way to work on it is by piggybacking with other projects.
One suggestion is to work on the Salute to Hospitalized Veterans Project which is found in your Leader’s Guide. By piggybacking the two projects, you can earn the Salute emblem and by substituting it for another step under Trail to Family and Community in the Centennial Project, you will have earned part of that emblem as well.
If you have any questions, please contact Susan Williams at susanw@campfireusa-ok.org or call (405)478-5646.
