Unfortunate News from Camp Cimarron

We are saddened to inform our members that the Camp Cimarron plaque at the camp's entrance was stolen this past weekend.  This action dishonors our Camp Fire organization, Lucyl Shirk, and each camper that has attended Camp Cimarron throughout the years.  A theft report is being filed with the Payne County Sheriff.  Any information regarding this matter would be greatly appreciated.

If the sign is anonymously returned in good condition, all charges will be dropped.

Program Tips--Service Learning

Service Learning is a method of teaching whereby youth learn and develop through active participation in thoughtfully organized service projects, and should be a part of ANY service project a club undertakes.  By utilizing their skills and knowledge to meet the needs of the community, youth learn by doing.

Service Learning has 5 Core Components...

  • Investigation
  • Preparation/Planning
  • Action
  • Reflection
  • Celebration/Demonstration.

...and can be accomplished in three ways:

  • Direct service
  • Indirect service
  • Advocacy

5 CORE COMPONENTS

Investigation:  Youth begin to think about community needs and identify one to address. They conduct research and document the need they will meet. They then identify other community partners who might be able to help the youth accomplish the need.

Preparation/Planning:  In this step, youth, working with their community partners if they have any, will plan how they are going to address the community need they have chosen. They decide what they are going to do and who will do what. They also need to determine how much, if anything, the project will cost. If they need funding, they will work to decide how to raise the money. In addition, the youth learn all they can about the community and the specific need they will be addressing. If they are doing the project for another organization or agency, they would need to learn about that specific organization or agency.  (This step will probably take most of the time allotted for the project.)

Action:  This is the actual service of service-learning. All youth implement their plans by engaging in the activities that will meet the community need they have chosen.

Reflection:  During this stage, youth talk about what they did, what went well and what didn’t. They also discuss what they could have done differently, and how their service helped the community.

Demonstration/Celebration:  The youth show what they did for their service project either to other clubs, their parents, school friends, etc. Then they celebrate what they did and how they made a difference within the community. Celebration follows the demonstration.

 FORMS OF SERVICE

Direct Service: Youth go to the site of their service recipient to perform the service, i.e. tutoring or serving meals at a shelter.

Indirect Service: The youth perform service away from the recipients and either take what they have done to them or invite the recipients to pick up what they did for them, i.e. school supply collection.

Advocacy: The youth will raise public awareness of an issue or concern within the community, possibly leading to discussion or debate on the issue, i.e., writing and performing a skit on child abuse.

In the program books for Pre-K through 5th grade, there is a service learning project called “Gift of Giving”.  In the Discovery and Horizon curriculum, it is called the “Star Project”.
